BCS Debate

As we all know by now, college football FINALLY starts next week.

That being said, it is time to start looking at the story lines of week one.

FSU’s first game in decades without Bobby Bowden?

USC’s first game under sanctions, and with new coach Lane Kiffin?

Those are just two of the games that do not make the top 5 of the first week.

But, don’t worry, there are some good ones.  And, as usual, I will be making my picks for Week 1 very soon….check back soon.

Alabama and Texas get to play in a national title game. For TCU, Cincinnati and Boise State, the math doesn’t quite add up but they still get a spot in a BCS bowl.

The quirky, imperfect method of choosing a national champion succeeded Sunday in matching top-ranked Alabama against No. 2 Texas in the BCS championship — a Jan. 7 game between undefeated teams that will bring together Heisman Trophy hopefuls Colt McCoy of the Longhorns and Mark Ingram of the Crimson Tide.

And, of course, it also produced plenty for the little guys to get upset about.

TCU (No. 4 BCS, No. 3 AP), Cincinnati (No. 3 BCS, No. 4 AP) and No. 6 Boise State also finished undefeated. All three were included in the BCS, but none will play for the title — a predictable result that will renew the annual debate about college football’s way of determining the best team in the land.

“It’s a fair question,” said BCS executive director Bill Hancock. “The fact is that the charge of the BCS is to match 1 and 2 in the bowl system. It’s a limited charge. It’s what the BCS is designed to do. Based on the season’s play, we’re confident we’ve matched 1 and 2.”

If only this were a commercial, then it would have its own tagline custom-fit like a wide receiver’s glove: “Bashing the BCS, so easy Notre Dame’s football team could do it.”

And we get it. It’s easy to rip on the BCS. It’s mocked so often that “NCAA Football brought to you by the BCS sucks” should just be stitched on every game ball, plastered outside the stadiums and weaved in to Lee Corso’s hair.

The BCS might be in shambles (just ask fans of Texas and Texas Tech) but at least fans will get a chance to see the two best teams in college football duke it out. A week after the computers jumped the shark by declaring Oklahoma the winner of the Big 12 South, and fully a month before the BCS Championship game in Miami, the top team in the land already will have been determined after Alabama and Florida knock heads in the Georgia Dome….(’continue reading’)

A weekend filled with bad news for Texas football fans could be followed by another.

Longhorns followers are reeling after Texas fell just behind No. 2 Oklahoma in the BCS standings, which settled the three-way tie atop the Big 12 South and sent Oklahoma to the Big 12 title game.

The next dose of bad news for Texas? There is no guarantee that the Longhorns will be chosen to play in the BCS title game if Missouri upsets Oklahoma on Saturday, says Jerry Palm, an independent BCS analyst and the publisher of collegebcs.org.

Tonight the MAC has one of its biggest games so far this season, as the No. 17 ranked Ball State Cardinals (10-0) look to remain perfect on the season when they travel to take on the two time defending MAC Conference champions in the Central Michigan Chippewas (8-2). Now Ball State might have the better record overall going into this one, but both teams are 6-0 in conference play with just two games remaining, but its not just them as Western Michigan sits at 6-1 with a matchup against Ball State in the final regular season game. Now there is no question the Cardinals have more to lose going into this one, as a perfect record and Conference Championship will likely land them in a big time bowl game this season.
